A group of local filmmakers are hoping to put Fort McMurray’s artistic talent on the map.

Staff at local comic book shop Nerdvana created a web series of the same name, which they have entered into a contest on Storyhive.

Storyhive, a Telus-based initiative that provides grants to up-and-coming filmmakers in Alberta and BC, will receive entries from all over Western Canada and the public will vote to determine which series are the most popular.

Up to 30 teams are eligible to receive initial funding of $10,000 to produce a pilot episode of their web series to be aired on Telus Optik TV.

Nerdvana the Series is a case of art imitating life, having found its genesis in the everyday antics of  its stars working together at a comic book shop.

“There were a few times at work where some really weird things kind of happened and we were like ‘Man, that would be really funny if it was a short!'” says star Ashley Laurenson.

Laurenson co-stars in the series with Steve Reeve, Mike Farough, Zachary Barrett and Matt Salem, with Tito Guillen directing and filming the project.

If the Nerdvana crew are chosen as one of the teams to receive funding, they will produce their pilot episode and another round of public voting will happen.

The second round of voting will winnow down the competition until the top two teams, one from Alberta and one from BC, are chosen.

Each of the winning teams will receive a $50,000 grant to produce a full season of their web series.

If Nerdvana the Series makes it through the preliminary stage, it won’t be the first time for three members of the creative team.

“We’ve been through it before with The Good Survivor, which was a short where we actually ended up getting into the top 30 teams,” said Laurenson, who worked on the project with Reeve and Guillen.

The team have already produced three episodes of the series under the name Season 0 (Zero) to give viewers a chance to see more than what is available through Storyhive prior to voting.

Episodes 1 and 2 can be viewed on the Nerdvana the Series Facebook page and the third episode will be available soon.

Starting on Monday, April 18th the public can visit Storyhive to view and vote on web series, with up to five votes per day.
