April 9th marked the 99th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, in which Canadian soldiers played an integral role.

The famous Allied offensive saw the newly formed Canadians Corps. leading the charge into German-occupied French territory.

Emerging victorious after three days of fighting, the Allies gained a significant advantage in the ongoing Battle of the Arras.

The victory came at the cost of 3,598 Canadian lives, leaving another 7,000 injured.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge is one of the defining moments in Canadian history, contributing to the sense of national identity that was beginning to form at the time.

No longer fighting for the British but for Canada, the soldiers at Vimy represented an awakening in the collective consciousness of the country that endures to this day.

2017 will mark the centennial of the armistice that ended The Great War, which ultimately claimed over 66,000 Canadian lives.
