RCMP conduct major arrest blitz in downtown area

Wood Buffalo RCMP aren’t joking on this April Fool’s Day.

The RCMP Strike Team swept into the downtown at approximately 1:30 p.m. Friday, conducting arrests on several individuals based on various warrants. Witnesses reported seeing suspects fleeing on foot in all directions from an apartment complex on Manning Avenue.

RCMP have yet to confirm how many people were arrested, but photos suggest at least three suspects are in custody.

Police used K-9 dogs to search for additional suspects in behind businesses that back on to Manning Ave.

“The strike team is more like an in-your-face type of unit,” Media Officer Cpl. George Cameron said. “If we have a bunch of warrants for different people for different things, they’ll go in and seek them out around the municipality and take them into custody.”

Initial communications from RCMP suggested that the action was related to Friday morning’s shooting outside of Boomtown Casino, but police later clarified that this was not the case.
