The world’s first green carnival is on its way back to Fort McMurray for another year.
Sustainival’s return was up in the air after Council cuts its funding during budget deliberations earlier this year.
Executive Director Odette Hutchings tells Mix News the environmental and local economic benefits of the carnival outweigh the short-term economic costs of hosting the festival.
“It’s not only an event that we want to bring to the community, this community has allowed Sustainival to become what it is today, and we want to give back an amazing 2018 season to say thank you. And we hope everyone comes out this year and celebrates with us.”
The event has been held in Fort McMurray for the past six years. On average, 20,000 people attend the green carnival each year with 2017 bringing in roughly 30,000.
Sustainival runs from June 14-17 at MacDonald Island Park.
