Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is going to be in our region Friday.
Trudeau is scheduled to meet with employees of Suncor’s Fort Hills facility north of Fort McMurray in the morning, followed by a roundtable discussion with energy sector leaders in the afternoon.
Last year, former Fort McMurray-Conklin MLA and Wildrose leader Brian Jean called on Trudeau to visit the oilsands after he said Canada needs to “phase the oilsands out, we need to manage our transition off of our dependence of fossil fuels.” Trudeau later said he misspoke, “I said something the way I shouldn’t have said it.”
Trudeau is also scheduled to meet with leaders from local First Nations and Métis communities.
On Thursday, the PM is giving a speech to G7 business leaders in Québec City before heading to British Columbia where he’ll participate in a clean tech roundtable and meet with Canadian Coast Guard workers to discuss marine safety and spill prevention.
This is Trudeau’s first visit to the region since the 2016 wildfire.
