For a third consecutive season, the Keyano Huskies men’s soccer team are your provincial champions.
The Huskies came away with a 1-nil win over NAIT on the weekend – with Fort McMurray native Joseph Lambele scoring the lone Husky marker.
Head Coach Murad Sukru tells Mix News it’s a wonderful feeling to wrap up his first season as coach with a provincial title.
“Having 10 rookies on the team, we did what we said we were going to do. Did I expect it? It’s a 50-50 type of thing. I know there was tons of pressure for me because of how well we’ve done in recent years but I was very confident as a team that we would do well.”
Sukru says in order to maintain the course, the team will have to remain focused.
He also sang the praises of Lambele, who he believes has a big role in the future of the team.
“He’s a very good player,” Sukru stated. “I was very shocked he wasn’t chosen for rookie of the year but it is what it is. He showed that he is the rookie of the year. Coming into the weekend and scoring two big goals – one being the game winner in the finals, it’s huge.”
Keyano looks to improve on last year’s silver medal finish at the hands of the Humber Hawks from Ontario.
Sukru says the team should use that loss as fuel heading into this year’s CCAA championships.
“The boys know what they have to do, we know what we need to work on. And we have experience being in Nationals last year, in the finals. I think the veterans will really step up. They really want to win gold and I am confident we will do well.”
The CCAA’s take place in Nanaimo, British Columbia, from November 8 – 11.
