It’s a non-stop weekend for Fort McMurray Junior Hockey.
After kicking off their season 2-and-0, the Fort McMurray Peewee ‘AA’ Junior Oil Barons open a weekend doubleheader as they get set to face the Fort St. John Flyers.
The Peewee squad exploded with a combined 21 goals through their first two games on the road two weeks ago – making mincemeat of the Dawson Creek Canucks in 12-5 and 9-6 wins.
Junior Barons Head Coach tells Mix News the hot start exemplifies lots of promise with this club.
“I think with this bunch of kids, we’ve got a lot of speed and we definitely can compete and do well into our season, possibly into provincials.”.
Through two games – the Barons are lead on offense by forward Bronson Seymour who leads the team with a scintillating 5 goals and 5 assists.
He’s followed by forwards Matthew Noble and Kayden Morrison – each of whom have tallied 7 points and Quinn Szpak and Braydon Vandenbilche who’ve notched 6 apiece.
McFatridge says he hopes his young squad can maintain their intensity heading into their weekend doubleheader.
“I just want to have a good weekend and do the stuff that we’ve been preaching since day one. I think if we do that and continue to utilize our speed – we will have a good outcome.”
McFatridge does note that it’s not a team without it’s flaws, but as the season progresses he is hoping to continue furthering the development of the group and help turn them into hardworking young men.
As coach – he hopes to instill the same philosophies that were passed down to him from his own mentors.
“Like I said, I think we have a really fast team and that’s definitely a strength. We have to work on positional play and working along the walls and getting the pucks out better than we have in the past but I think with a couple good games this weekend and few good practices next week, we can definitely nail that down.”
The Barons open their weekend doubleheader later today at Frank Lacroix Arena – with puck drop at 3:45 p.m.
Meanwhile, game two is set for Sunday with a bright and early game time of 8 a.m.
