I decided to watch this one this week by popular demand. I have to say, I am loving it.
Atypical follows Sam, an 18-year-old boy on the autism spectrum who is looking for love and independence. It’s a classic coming of age story but from a perspective, many of us would never have seen before. I have a few friends on the autism spectrum and I can confirm that Aytpical is fairly accurate about their experiences. Obviously, in some places, it doesn’t quite do the condition justice and at points, the plot can be fairly predictable but this appears to be one of the first attempts at Autistic representations through media which earns it respect in its own right regardless of the things it gets wrong.
Atypical is appropriately funny given the subject matter and does an amazing job at making you really feel for Sam and what he goes through. It’s a good lens into how the world is perceived on the autism spectrum. I highly recommend it at 8.9/10.
