One Wood Buffalo Councillor won’t be seeking re-election come October.
On Wednesday, Colleen Tatum announced her decision publicly as part of her farewell speech to the rest of her colleagues – at the last council meeting before the election.
She is the third council member who has decided against running – joining Tyran Ault and Mayor Melissa Blake.
Tatum tells Mix News there were many different factors in her decision.
“It’s an accumulation of lot of different feelings and thoughts, my kids are in grade 1 and 2 right now and I feel like I need to be home and do homework with them but that’s not the only reason – I sort of just feel like my time there has come to an end.”
Tatum was first elected to council back in 2012, as part of a by-election but just a year later she failed to win a seat during the 2013 election. Two years later, she won her second by-election replacing former Mayor Guy Boutilier.
“It feels a lot longer than it was. I’ve learned a tremendous amount and it’s been such an honour and it’s been really stretching – which is what I loved about it,” added Tatum.
She says for the time being she’ll be spending a lot of her time with her family and working at their small business – MXC Automotive Services.
Tatum isn’t ruling out a possible run in the next election but for the time being she’s “following her heart.”
