Alberta’s Electoral Boundary Commission is recommending the riding of Fort McMurray-Conklin be redrawn to include Lac La Biche.
In its interim report, which was presented to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, they noted the decision was made based on the entire population of the constituency, as the act requires.
Expanding Fort McMurray-Conklin to include Lac La Biche would bring the riding population to 36,112, which is still 23 per cent below the provincial average population of 46, 697.
These numbers don’t include the shadow population.
The Commission says 9,180 people were subtracted from the electoral division to account for the number of people Elections Alberta estimates haven’t returned from the wildfire.
The report states the move could change before the final report is presented in October if the Commission is able to establish a more accurate population figure for Fort McMurray-Conklin.
The public is invited to submit feedback on the recommendation until July 8.
