A Fort McMurray woman from Quebec is baking to give back to flood victims from her home province.
Melissa Gervais originally hails from Gatineau – one of the area’s most affect by the flooding – and is organizing a bake sale with donations going to the Red Cross.
After having lived through the wildfire, she understands exactly what people of Quebec and parts of Ontario are going through and wants to extend her support.
She feels it’s her duty to show love for these people, just like the love we received through this last year.
“I can feel exactly what they’re feeling and understand what they’re going through. I guess it’s just my way of giving back from all the help and love we got during the evacuation.”
Gervais came to Fort McMurray shortly before the wildfire and lived through the blaze and evacuation.
As a result – she’s fairly understanding of what people in Quebec and parts of Ontario are going through.
“We’re here for them. They’re not alone. Don’t be discouraged, you’ll get through this! I guess we can set a good example in that it’s been a very hard time for them and very overwhelming but as a community – just stick together and you’ll get through it.”
Gervais has family and friends who at the moment, don’t have a place to call home.
“My mom is pretty close to the area that’s been flooded but her place is still okay. I do know a few people whose houses are completely submerged by the water so they’ve pretty much lost everything. They had the clothes on their back when they left and they don’t have anything else.”
Her hometown of Gatineau is one of the most devastated as a result of the floods.
The Bake Sale will take place at Fort City Church on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
