Suncor is looking to add a new oilsands project just north of Fort McMurray.
Later this year, the oil giant will be submitting an application to the Alberta Energy Regulator for the Lewis project. This is a proposed multi-stage in situ project, still waiting to be sanctioned by Suncor.
The project would be located 25 kilometres northeast of Fort McMurray, nearly half way between Fort McKay, covering 24,000 hectares of land.
The project would last between 25-40 years and produce around 160,000 barrels per day.
Suncor would also introduce new technology which includes a new enhanced solvent extraction incorporating electromagnetic heating pilot and the Nsolv pilot.
Both are alternative waterless extraction techniques using electromagnetic heating and vaporized solvents.
If approved, construction could start by 2024 with it being operational by 2027.
