The Wood Buffalo Recovery Committee could be gone in the next two months.
At Tuesday night’s council meeting, Mayor Melissa Blake brought up a notice of motion which would see council take over the job of the committee. The Recovery Task Force would still be intact but report directly to council.
“The people on the ground that are doing the recovery work will still be in place and it’s just a change in the reporting structure. Council wants to be responsible for the governance,” said Blake. “Those task force members are a shared resource between the municipality and recovery work so we’re not seeing a shift in that in the near term.”
The committee was created in June 2016, where it consisted of three councillors, Sheldon Germain, Allan Vinni and Keith McGrath. Just a couple months later, the committee added six members from the community.
“I’ve been giving indications to members of the committee that I think it was coming to a conclusion and trying to figure out how or when that might best fit.”
Council will discuss the motion at their next meeting scheduled for April 25.
If they vote in favor of the motion, the committee would be officially done by June 11.
