Golf enthusiasts won’t have to wait much longer before hitting the green.
Next Friday, the 14th, the Miskanaw Golf Club will open its back nine.
“Weather permitting, we are preparing to open the front nine on April 21 as we celebrate the beginning of the season in Fort McMurray,” Rob MacGregor, PGA of Canada Director of Golf at the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo, said in a release.
Meanwhile, the driving range at the Fort McMurray Golf Club opened Thursday morning.
“We have people coming in just talking about their winters and grabbing a coffee. It’s more of an atmosphere and experience. It’s less about hitting range balls off our new turf, it’s more about reconnecting with friends and getting back into the swing of things,” General Manager Mike Gillian tells Mix News.
The Club has yet to announce a date for the course opening, but Gillian says the new nine hole course will open one week after the original 18 holes.

Meanwhile, Gillian says they’re working out of seven trailers this season after losing their clubhouse and other buildings in last year’s wildfire. But he adds they’re really close to getting shovels in the ground.
“Our maintenance building is well underway, our log cabin, which is our halfway hut, that’s in the process of being built and delivered. But the clubhouse is in works and it’s going to be absolutely beautiful when it’s done.”
Gillian adds they’re planning a grand unveiling of the new clubhouse next spring.
