The Fort McMurray Bantam AA Oil Barons are bronze medalists in Alberta.
The Barons finished third in the round robin tournament before beating the St Albert Comets in the bronze medal game by a score of 7-to-4.
Head Coach Dave Konowalec tells Mix News he’s happy with his team’s overall effort at provincials and they can be proud to be among Alberta’s best minor hockey squads.
“There’s a lot of good teams, I mean you’re competing against the five best teams in Alberta,” Konowalec said. “And we were fortunate enough to come out with the medal so that’s pretty impressive – top three – not too often you can say that.”
Captain Max McCoy and forward Brendan Evans led the Barons with 4 goals each which was tied for second in the tournament.
Konowalec says that it was a great experience for the boys.
He talks about one of the games where the Barons rallied back from a 4-0 deficit to tie the Calgary Wranglers.
“The kids rallied around, came back – scored four goals in the third period to give themselves a chance. All those clubs are pretty special and hopefully we can take some learning from that and put it toward our next series.”
Konowalec adds the boys can take a lot out of their team play at provincials as they look ahead for the upcoming ERBHL Championship.
The Barons host the Comets for the championships this weekend. It’s the first-time Fort McMurray has hosted in over 25 years.
