Volleyball teams from North and South America are heading to Fort McMurray for a chance to play in the World Championships.
Volleyball Canada’s Director of International Events, Alan Ahac, says this is a very important tournament as it’s the first international event held in Fort McMurray since the wildfire.
“Having a major event will certainly contribute to the re-building process.”
Mayor Melissa Blake echoes Ahac’s statement, adding this will be a great chance to highlight the best of our region.
This isn’t the first time Volleyball Canada has helped out Fort McMurray, as they donated $10,000 to the Red Cross Fire Relief last year when it held one of its national events in Edmonton.
Ahac says they’re are excited to be working with the local organizing committee, volleyball community and volunteers to make this event at success.
The round-robin portion of the tournament will run May 16 to 18, and the playoffs will be held May 19 to 21 at Keyano College.
The two winning teams will head to the Czech Republic to compete at the World Championships in June.
