A former Fort McMurrayite is on the short list to become an astronaut.
Vanessa Fulford, who was born here in the community, is one of 72 participating in Canada’s astronaut recruitment campaign.
Her time in school saw her get a Bachelor’s in Space Science with the Royal Military College of Canada.
According to the Canadian Space Agency website, Fulford says her dreams of becoming an astronaut comes from her “hunger for discovery, learning experiences, and the knowledge that comes with each new adventure.”
She currently resides in Cold Lake where she works as a Flight Test Engineer for the Royal Canadian Air Force. She also ensures new equipment and software works correctly and safely.
“I truly believe that it is through the exploration of space that we will generate the technologies needed to further the human race,” said Fulford in her bio on the Canadian Space Agency. “Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I want to be a role model for future generations. I take pride in motivating and exciting people about the possibilities of the future and the amazing things that they can experience.
If chosen, Fulford would spend the next two years training at NASA.
