The federal government has approved the 2017 NOVA Gas Transmission Limited System Expansion Project.
The $1.3 billion project will involve the construction and operation of five pipeline section loops in northern Alberta as part of its existing NGTL.
That includes the Pelican Lake Section, located about 100 km southwest of Fort McMurray and Christina River Section, which is located roughly 100 km southeast of the city.
A few existing NOVA Gas Transmission pipelines already run passed Fort McMurray.
The project is expected to create up to 3000 jobs during construction, address the need for increase natural gas transmission capacity along the existing NGTL system and support economic growth in the province.
The approval came after much consultation with the National Energy Board, Environment and Climate Change Canada’s assessment of greenhouse gas emissions and views of Canadians gathered through an online questionnaire.
The approval is subject to 36 binding conditions.
