A couple from High River are helping bring Christmas cheer to Fort McMurray residents.
Helga Lempriere and her husband, Terry, lost most of their personal belongings during a massive flood that ravaged the region in 2013.
Helga tells Mix News the support they received after the flooding was incredible and they knew they had to help residents here in the municipality after the fire.
“When we started seeing the pictures and hearing about Fort McMurray, it was kind of a flash back. And so, I could totally empathize with that. I re-called the Christmas ornament drive that happened here and thought, why doesn’t someone do that for Fort McMurray and why can’t that someone be me?”
The couple has been collected ornaments in cities across southern Alberta and those decorations are now being brought to Fort McMurray next week.
Since donation quantities are limited, people picking up Christmas decor will have to complete a short intake form to ensure donations are received by those who need them most.
The temporary distribution centre will be located at the Diamond Ballroom, Baseball Stadium at Shell Place from Wednesday to Friday.
