This is a day of firsts! It’s the first movie I’ve covered AND the first Netflix thing that hasn’t been a brand new release.
American Ultra was released back in 2015 and follows the story of a stoner named Mike Howell (Jessie Eisenberg). He works at a convenience store, he smokes tonnes of weed, spends his time drawing his “Apollo Monkey” graphic novel and he is terrified of leaving his home town in West Virginia to the point of anxiety attack. Mike is in love with a girl named Phoebe Larson (Kristen Stewart) and has plans to marry her. That’s when everything falls apart for our mild mannered stoner. It turns out Mike was part of a secret CIA initiative to create the ultimate super spies, he was trained to be a killing machine and he doesn’t remember any of it. When the CIA decides to terminate Mike his secret skills are unlocked and he discovers the truth about not only himself but the truth Phoebe has been hiding from him for years.
The action scenes in American Ultra are amazing and the story is very enjoyable.
I won’t get any further into the details but I’ve come to love this movie. It earns a 7.5/10 on the Tyler Scale.
