Landlords and Tenants got together earlier this week to understand their rights and responsibilities.
The information session was put on by the RMWB.
Landlord and Tenant Advisor Heidi Major tells Mix News one of the major issues people were concerned about was getting leases signed before the winter.
“Both landlord and tenants wanted to make sure that they weren’t going into the winter months and would either have to be looking for housing or looking for tenants.”
She adds another big concern is a security deposit, as that’s where landlords could get in the most trouble and face up to $35, 000 in fines by the province.
“The move in and move out inspection is the one thing that protects the landlord’s property and the one thing that protects a tenant’s security deposit. So I highly recommend that both parties participate in that.”
Meanwhile, Major says whether it’s during the boom time or a natural disaster, Fort McMurray will always have its housing challenges.
If you are having trouble with your landlord or tenant, Major recommends contacting the advisory board.
