You know the 5 O’Clock Remix on Mix? The Get Down is a show about how that genre started and the difficulties of growing up in the Bronx in the 70’s.
Our story starts with our main character Ezekiel (Justice Smith) trying to profess his love to Mylene (Herizen F. Guardiola). Ezekiel (or Zeke) is quite the poet and uses his poetic skills to tell Mylene how he feels but she isn’t having it. Mylene has a plan and can’t be distracted by a boy, she’s going to be the worlds next big Disco Star.
While this is happening Zeke’s friend Dizzy (Jaden Smith) is practicing his art of graffiti and his hero/inspiration is a master tagger Shao 007 also known as Shaolin Fantastic (Shameik Moore) known for his artistic skill, his slickness and his crisp clean red pumas.
Now that the basic setup of characters is done everything gets crazy bananas. People get murdered, amazing remixes happen, and we get to watch Zeke go from a mild-mannered kid from the Bronx into a master Word-Smith with his DJ close at hand. This show gives us a look into the birth of the Hip-Hop genre and it is incredible.
The show has an interesting feel that you won’t see outside of The Get Down. Even if you weren’t born yet it’ll take you right back to the 70’s to the heart of disco, drugs, and amazingly terrible fashion. If you want a show that will play with your emotions like no other; this is the show for you.
I’m giving it 9.9/10 on the Tyler Scale. The highest score so far.
