A Fort McMurray support group is looking for volunteers to serve on its board.
The Autism Support Group of the RMWB is made up of parents, health workers, teachers and others interested in supporting families affected by autism.
Member Kirsti Mardell says soon after her middle child was diagnosed with autism she discovered there was little in the way of support in the community.
“We found that there was basically nothing in the way of supports and guidance in Fort McMurray, we were guided toward Edmonton, their societies and their support network. And we finally found a support network here in fort McMurray. We got involved with them,” says Mardell.
Mardell says autism covers a spectrum of behaviors and sometimes occurs along with physical disorders like epilepsy.
“So people with epilepsy can sometimes have autism as well, people with Down’s Syndrome can have autism, so it touches on a lot of other disabilities as well,” says MArdell.
Mardell says anyone with a family member with autism or anyone interested in learning more is invited to join their group.
The meeting tonight is to elect executive board positions and is at seven at 20 Reidel Street on the second floor.
