Sport Central and United Cycle are donating $500,000 worth of sports equipment to the community.
A fifty-three foot trailer full of equipment will be arriving on Wednesday, September 7th and distributed between Fort McMurray Minor Hockey, Fort McMurray Minor Baseball and Fort McMurray Minor Football.
“We started outfitting the children of displaced families a day after the evacuation and haven’t stopped,” says Sheldon Oleksyn, Executive Director of Sport Central. “We have been working closely with our Founding Partner, United Cycle, on a number of initiatives enabling children from the North to keep playing the sports they love.“
Sport Central, is a registered charity, whose sole mission is to provide equipment to kids in need, ages 3-17, across Edmonton and Northern Alberta.
One of the main goals of the the drive was to create a legacy for an up and coming Fort McMurray Sport Equipment Distribution Centre, which would continue to ensure support in the region.
Sports Central and United Way also sees this equipment starting a process of collecting, recycling and reusing for families in need across the community for many years.
They’re still currently accepting equipment and cash donations for families affected by the Fort McMurray wildfires.
