Not one, but two apologies by Brian Jean followed a comment that the opposition Wildrose leader said at a town hall forum on Tuesday night.
“I’ve been beating this drum for 10, 11 years. I will continue to beat it, I promise. But it’s against the law to beat Rachel Notley.”
This comment followed Fort McMurray seniors advocate Joan Furber’s complaint about the quality of seniors’ care and housing in Fort McMurray.
Many concerns were raised about the comment, despite him being apologetic.
Many people think an apology only goes so far and he should not have said it in the first place.
His second apology as follows, was also criticized.
“Last night during my town hall I made an inappropriate attempt at humour that I promptly apologized for. Jokes of this nature are never acceptable, and I hold myself to a higher standard. I have reached out to Premier Notley to sincerely apologize directly to her.”
Jackie Foord, Chief Executive of the Edmonton YWCA said of the apology,
“We have a problem, and references like, ‘We can’t beat the premier,’ aren’t helping the situation, the more you talk about it and the more you say, ‘Oh, it was just a joke,’ the more normalized it becomes.”
Can Brian Jean recover from this? Let us know in the comments.
