A program that turns ordinary people into stand up comics is returning to Fort McMurray.
This time the third annual Stand Up for Mental Health will be showcasing alumni from the previous two years.
Comedian David Granirer is once again leading and teaching the local comics.
“Stand Up for Mental Health is my program teaching stand-up comedy to folks like myself with mental health issues and this is our third year in Fort McMurray. This year is going to be kind of special because people are also going to be talking about their experiences with the fire and the evacuation,” says Granirer.
Granirer says the wildfire, evacuation, and now recovery demonstrate how resilient the community is and resilience happens to be the theme of the show this year.
“I think any time there’s traumatic events there’s also some absurd, humorous stuff that happens. I think it’s really important to say that stuff because that’s how we heal,” says Granirer.
Tickets will be available soon from SOS and will be free, although a silent auction will be held and donations will be collected for the Wood Buffalo Food Bank.
