A free flower distribution that was supposed to go from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. was over early this afternoon after an “incredible response” from the community.
The Fort McMurray United Way announced that shortly after 1 p.m. all of the 1,000 flowers had been given out.
Spokesperson Russell Thomas said they unloaded the trucks ahead of schedule, and people began arriving for the flowers around noon.
“The response was unbelievable,” he said. “The emotion of some people was incredible.”
Thomas noted that many left with large numbers of planters in order to distribute them to those who couldn’t physically come to pick them up.
However, some residents were a little upset with the before-schedule distribution.
“People loaded up as much as they could,” wrote one listener. “Went home with sad kids who just wanted a basket.”
