Fort McMurray is leading the way again.
Statistics Canada’s latest figures show Alberta’s employment insurance numbers rose 12.1 per cent in May, the country’s largest increase in beneficiaries.
Wood Buffalo contributed nearly one third of that figure, with the number of beneficiaries more than doubling from 1,900 to 4,500.
The rise in beneficiaries coincides with the wildfire and subsequent evacuation of the community.
On a national level, employment insurance numbers rose only 0.9 per cent, although the number of claims rose 9.7 per cent, the largest increase in claims since February 2009.
The number of claims indicates how many could become beneficiaries.
