Can you imagine the oilsands without tailings ponds?
The Alberta Energy Regulator has introduced new rules that could eliminate the toxic ponds.
A phased approach in the new directive Fluid Tailings Management for Oil Sands Mining Projects requires performance reporting and ensuring progressive reclamation.
The new requirements call for all fluid tailings to be ready to reclaim within 10 years of the end of the mine’s life.
AER CEO Jim Ellis says the new requirements will ultimately remove tailings from the landscape of Alberta. Details on the directive may be found here.
