The Fort McMurray wildfire is not threatening any communities, but it’s still not out either.
Wildfire Information Officer Lynn Daina says the wildfire is currently being held after burning 589,617 hectares including an area on the Saskatchewan side.
Daina says although the fire ban was lifted last week for both the forest and urban areas, residents and visitors still need a fire permit for all burning except campfires.
Daina adds the current fire hazard index level is high for the Fort McMurray Forest Area with northern portions very high.
She says there is still the potential for smouldering ground fires to produce smoke, but firefighters are constantly monitoring the situation and actively extinguishing any wildfires that emerge.
