The RMWB is taking one more step towards normalcy Friday, resuming commercial air service at the Fort McMurray International Airport.
The first flight is set to arrive at 9:15 a.m., an Air Canada service touching down from Calgary. The airport authority has a little celebration planned for arrivees and the public. Welcome bags will be given to arriving passengers, and food and water will be available.
The airport is also putting together a “Welcome Home” art installation that residents can contribute to by inscribing their own messages on the piece.
“We’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone home,” said Communications Coordinator Jillian Philipp.
Full air service will be returning over the next few weeks. That date will be determined once the airspace is clear of Alberta Agriculture and Forestry air crews battling the wildfire.
Concessions also haven’t been returned to full service levels yet, but they’re hoping to return to normal service as soon as possible.
