Fort McMurray just can’t catch a break.
Less than a week after the beginning of re-entry, an unrelated fire destroyed Cassia Manor at Franklin Landing Monday evening.
The fire was detected at approximately 7:45 p.m. and quickly consumed the roof and top floor of the building. By 10 p.m. officials said the fire was under control.
Deputy Fire Chief Brad Grainger said only the property managers were on the premises when the fire broke out, and they managed to get out safely. RCMP also evacuated nearby buildings up to King Street as a precaution as the winds blew the smoke towards the rest of the downtown core.
Grainger said the building was a complete loss, as the roof caved in after the fire passed through several fire walls in the building. Crews are currently investigating the cause. After the investigation is complete, heavy equipment will demolish what’s left of the building.
Emergency Management Director Bob Couture assured the public Monday night that the fire had no relation to the wildfire, which is now burning 25 kilometres east of the city.
