It appears that most evacuees have found temporary homes until they’re allowed back to Fort McMurray.
The City of Edmonton announced early this afternoon that the Northlands Evacuation Centre had officially shut down operations as of noon today. Officials say that everyone who had been sleeping there has found short-term accommodations, and cited the nearing re-entry date as a reason for closing the facility.
At the height of the evacuation, 2,000 people were sleeping at the centre.
Early re-entry is still set for June 1, with final safety tests to be conducted leading up to the date.
