At a press conference this afternoon CEO of Suncor Steve Williams says overall, about a million barrels of oil a day have been offline although some production has already resumed. He thanked first responders and others for help.
At the press conference Premier Notley said workers are going to be returning to the north camps first, as returning to the city is a secondary process.
She also said there are few communities in the world that are as isolated as Fort McMurray which would be able to evacuated as quickly.
The province issued a press release after the conference:
Oil sands sites in the Fort McMurray region have been secured and are not in danger from the wildfire at this point. No consequential damage was sustained by any oil sands facility or other energy infrastructure.
Each facility has extensive safety procedures in place to protect employees and infrastructure. Also, the industry is experienced in executing safe shutdowns and restarts of its operations.
The Alberta Energy Regulator has created a recovery team to assist on planning for the safe and environmentally responsible resumption of operations. The regulator is working with each affected company on a start-up plan. This will work will include appropriate authorizations, inspections, monitoring and logistical support to get sites operational.
