A long-time resident and community volunteer is being recognized for her work by Girls Inc.
The organization has named Valerie Parks as their 11th nominee for the Woman of Inspiration Award.
Parks is known for her volunteerism, most recently with the YMCA where she runs the English Conversational Circles. The program aims to help immigrant women learn the language to help them integrate into Canadian society.
She is credited with breaking down the “barrier of loneliness” for these women, and helping them with the basic things like which laundry detergent to use.
Parks also spends time volunteering for the Salvation Army, helping job seekers with their resumes and cover letters.
She will be honoured along with 11 other nominees at a ceremony in June.
