Boyle RCMP said Highway 63 was “impassable” in both directions as a grass fire burned 12km north of Atmore Monday evening.
Police say the fire broke out just before 7 p.m., quickly spreading and jumping a service road along the highway. They add that the fire is currently “straddling” 63, billowing smoke in several directions and reducing visibility in the area.
Wildland firefighter crews are on-scene with air support to battle the blaze.
511Alberta provided an update just after 9 p.m. saying that both southbound lanes had re-opened and northbound was down to one lane. By early Tuesday morning, the highway had completely re-opened.
Officials say no-one was injured in the fire, and no buildings were damaged.
