The lights are being dimmed at the airport this weekend but that won’t affect operations.
Saturday night between 8:30 and 9:30, Earth Hour will be marked around the world as people and corporations turn out or dim lighting in an effort to raise awareness about power consumption and taking action on climate change.
The Fort McMurray International Airport says it will be participating by dimming non-essential lighting throughout the terminal and the airport campus; lighting that will not impact airport operations.
The Airport Authority says the facility has already adopted a number of other green initiatives including passive solar orientation and eliminating paper towels from public washrooms.
Earth Hour began in Australia in 2007 and has since spread around the world.
