Is it time to radically change the make-up of municipal council? That question will be answered Tuesday night, as councillors debate a motion put forward by Councillor Keith McGrath with a rash of recommendations that would alter both how council looks and how it operates.
The motion’s most controversial point is how it would change representation, taking a seat away from Ward 2 and providing an additional Ward 1 seat. The move would reduce Fort Chipewyan, Fort McKay, and Fort Fitzgerald’s representation to one lone councillor, while giving Ward 1 a total of seven representatives.
In addition, the motion looks for the deputy mayor to become a full-time, directly-elected position and would create a three-councillor “executive council.”
The motion will be both debated and voted on by councillors Tuesday night’s meeting, which begins at 6 p.m.
